Making IIM Shillong Selection Criteria Simple

Situated in the beautiful Northeastern Region of Meghalaya, IIM Shillong attracts the bright minds of India every year towards its flagship PGP program. To get admission in IIM Shillong after having done the CAT exam, there are several other criteria too as mentioned below which need to be satisfied with high scores.

IIM Shillong is one of the few of the IIMs who just consider CAT scores for shortlisting. FMS Delhi also follows the same, know about the selection criteria of FMS

Steps in Preparing IIM Shillong Shortlist 2022

IIM Shillong Cutoff

IIM Shillong doesn't have any overall percentile cutoffs as in the case of other IIMs. Being in a general category, you need to satisfy the sectional cutoff of 75 percentile for each section. The full IIM Shillong cut off list for different categories is mentioned below.

Now, the remaining IIM shillong shortlisting criteria would be easily understandable to you if you are familiar with the ACRC group system in IIM Ahmedabad selection criteria. Even if not, I will try to keep it as simple as possible.

So first of all, there are many students from diverse academic disciplines and diverse categories who apply to IIM Shillong. There are 4 caste categories and 7 academic categories( ACs) that are recognized for shortlisting. 4 caste categories include EWS, SC, ST, and others( referred to as E, C, T, and O respectively) and 7 ACs include AC1 (all science and agricultural disciplines), AC2 (all arts and humanities discipline), AC3 (all commerce related disciplines), AC4(all engineering disciplines), AC5(Medicine and surgery disciplines), AC6 (professional degrees including CA, CMA, and CS), and AC7 (including all other disciplines not included in AC1 to AC6).

Now, suppose a total of X candidates are to be shortlisted. The bifurcation of the proportion of candidates to be shortlisted for each category as per the IIM Shillong admission criteria is 10% in EWS, 7.5% in ST, 15% in SC, and the remaining 67.5% in general ( including EWS, ST, SC, and others).Taking a hypothetical yet simple example, if there are 2000 applicants to be shortlisted, only 200 will be shortlisted for EWS and so on for others.

To select an equal proportion of candidates from different ACs, the following formula is used:-

(Number of applicants from a category present in a specific AC/ Total number of applicants appeared in a category from all ACs)*Number of applicants to be shortlisted from a category

So, continuing with the previous example, if candidates to be shortlisted in the E category are 200, and suppose 350 candidates are from AC1 in E and overall 1000 candidates from all ACs in E who appeared for CAT and applied to IIM Shillong, candidates to be shortlisted for AC1 from Category E would be 350/1000*200=70 candidates.

IIM Shillong Admission Criteria- Final Stage

In IIM Shillong, only one round is conducted, that is, a personal interview. Know how to prepare for the PI round. After having done this round, a merit list is prepared based on an overall score. All the IIMs including IIM Shillong follow the reservation policy of the Government of India. Also, there is a minimum requirement of bringing at least 20% to 30%( different for different categories) in a personal interview to be eligible for computation of the overall score. In computing your final overall score, 70% weightage is given to the normalized PI score and 30% to the normalized CAT overall score of the candidate. That's it. Based on highest to lowest scores, IIM Shillong results are declared where top-ranking candidates are offered final admission offers to the point where all seats for all the categories get filled.

IIM Shillong's admission criteria is quite simple as compared to the selection criteria of other IIMs. But having said that, it's not that simple to get into this B-School as the CAT score is the only player here during shortlisting as well as the selection process. Scoring in CAT should be your priority to maximize your chances to get there. Hence, keep your CAT preparation on and make it the best to reap out the best. Acadergy too is delivering excellence in CAT preparation support so you can get a feather in your cap in the CAT results.
